  Abstract: Preparation for the ICD-10 transition presents challenges to both physicians and health systems. Interface design, detailed documentation, workflow changes and other elements of the conversion need to be carefully planned. In this session, the most common mistakes that happen will be identified and strategies to avoid them will be explained.

  Abstract: Coding and documentation changes are at the heart of the conversion to ICD-10. Far more detailed coding will be required than is currently demanded by ICD-9. Coding staff and other employees with responsibility for pre-certification, billing and documentation of medical necessity will be faced with expanded duties, and will need to understand the finite details of coding. Additionally, physicians and other clinicians will be expected to provide more detail in their documentation and coding.

Dr. Joe Nichols is a board certified Orthopedic Surgeon with a long history in health information technology. He has a wide range of experiences in healthcare information technology on the provider, payer and vendor side of healthcare business. He has served in positions in executive management, system design, logical database architecture, product management, consulting and healthcare value measurement for the last 15 of his 35 years in the healthcare industry. He was CEO of a third party claim Administration company for 5 years among a number of other high level positions related to healthcare data and information technology. He previously taught a course in ‘Disease Concepts’ for the Health Information Management Program at the University of Washington and was a co-author of a university text on electronic health records. He has been focused on the analysis of ICD-10 and the impact on health informatics, cross-walking education and other issues of the ICD-10 transition.

Rhonda Buckholtz, CPC, CPMA, CPC-1

Rhonda Buckholz is the Vice President of Business Development and Member Relations for AAPC. A seasoned coder and coding educator, she previously served AAPC as director of local chapter relations and as a member of the organization’s National Advisory Board. She is a certified coder and PMCC coding instructor, and speaks frequently at coding conferences. She is the owner of Coding and Reimbursement Experts, a Pennsylvania coding consulting service, and teaches coding at the Venango campus of Clarion University. Prior to her employment with AAPC, Ms. Buckholtz was administrator for Wolf Creek Medical Associates, managing a five location multi-specialty practice and was business manager at an otolaryngology practice.

Jaime James, RHIA, MHA

Ms. James is responsible for the overall leadership and strategic direction of HIMS for 23 acute care facilities located in seven states and ranging in size from small, critical access to large, teaching hospitals including one psychiatric facility. During her time at Banner Health, Ms. James facilitated the implementation of standardized HIM processes as part of the successful conversion to CPOE and a complete electronic environment at 10 Banner facilities. She is in the planning process for the conversion of seven more in 2011. She is the operational lead for the Banner-wide ICD-10 planning and implementation initiative and participates on the system-wide Meaningful Use team to ensure successful Stage 1 reporting.

Linda Martin, MA, PMP

Linda Martin is responsible for all functions required to successfully initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control, and complete multiple projects as assigned by the project management office. Her main focus has been on implementation of clinical applications in Banner Health’s 23 hospitals and HIMSS-related applications. During her time at Banner Health, Ms. Martin worked with HIMSS to develop a cross-functional HIMSS program comprised of executive sponsors from various departments that interacts with HIMSS on projects to define how new projects are developed and managed for successful completion. Ms. Martin was also responsible for developing a CPOE-HIMSS project support team, which worked to develop the support systems required to ensure successful CPOE implementations. She has also been the project manager for the implementation of a standardized electronic transcription system in all Banner Health hospitals. Since November 2009, Ms. Martin has been the project manager for the ICD 10-HIPAA 5010 program at Banner Health, which currently comprises nine separate projects, an oversight team, and an ongoing management work team.

Ross Lippincott

Ross Lippincott is a Vice President with UnitedHealthcare's Provider and Network Service Operations organization. He is the business owner for UnitedHealth Group's 5010 and ICD-10 enterprise deployment programs, a position he has held since 2009. In his 10 years with UnitedHealthcare, Ross has held a variety of leadership roles supporting hospital and physician operations, including regional provider relations, network integrations, call centers, and network data management. Prior to joining UnitedHealthcare, Ross was a consultant for 13 years with Accenture's Healthcare and Government practice. He holds an MBA from the University of Kansas.
